Ancient Greek is one of the basic languages through the centuries. It is not only due to its (linguistic and mental) relationship to the European culture, but also because of its diachronic history. The modern world, as we experience it nowadays, has been mainly based on the influence of the ancient Greek and Roman cultures.  The earliest documents of the Greek language are dated in the 15th century BC. It is about written records in the syllabic Linear B script, which were imprinted on clay tablets. In 1952, the classicists Michael Ventris and John Chadwick deciphered these texts, which were found during excavations at the Mycenaean palaces, and proved that their language was the ancient Greek. Moreover, modern scholars have discussed that the Homeric texts have been initially written in the Mycenaean dialect. Since the use of the Phoenician alphabet in the 8th century BC, the main Greek idiom, the Attic, has been used to express the necessities of Philosophy, Poetry, Politics,

An important finding at Epidauros: a new temple discovered

An unknown building of the 6th century BC has been discovered right next to the renowned Tholos, which is the most iconic building of Asclepius. According to Professor Vassilis Lamprinoudakis, head of the excavations at ancient Epidaurus, it is about "a sacred building - a forerunner of the Tholos, which was originally the site of Asclepius' worship". BC ( © warwick.ac.uk) The building, discovered at a depth of 3 meters, has a rectangular plan and one side reaches five meters (the rest have not yet been excavated) while its height must have reached 2.8 meters. It also had a basement, 2.3 meters high with a corresponding area of ground floor and its floor was paved with small white pebbles while its walls were covered by red mortar. On the ground floor, there was also a pillar of wooden columns, as evidenced by the square stone bases on which they initially  rested. Reconstruction of the early Tholos of anc

Antigone (full movie with english subtitles) - starring Manos Katrakis, Irene Pappa et al.

Antigone is an ancient tragedy of Sophocles, most likely presented in the Great Dionysia of 441 BC. Its subject comes from the ancient city Thebes, from which Sophocles drew material for two of his other tragedies, Oedipus Rex  and Oedipus at Colonos .  The fictional events of Antigone are later chronological than those of the two Oedipus-tragedies, but Antigone was introduced before them. Her subject is Antigone's attempt to bury the second of her two dead brothers, Polyneikes, despite Creon's (king of Thebes) contrary command, putting the honor of the gods and her brother's love above human laws. Antigone is Sophocles' second oldest surviving tragedy, after Ajax. The movie appeared on 22nd of January, 1961 and is remarkable for the accurate sceneries and the renown actors, such as Irene Papas, Manos Katrakis, Maro Kontou and others

In late December 870 the Vikings invaded Wessex and occupied Reading. Several battles followed in quick succession, Englefield, a West Saxon victory, Reading, a Viking victory and Ashdown on about 8 January, a West Saxon victory. Two weeks later, King Æthelred and his brother, the future King Alfred the Great, were defeated at Basing. There was then a lull of two months until the Battle of Meretun, when the Vikings again prevailed. Soon after Easter, which fell on 15 April in that year, Æthelred died and was succeeded by Alfred.[2] The Battle of Basing can be dated because Bishop Heahmund of Sherborne died in the Battle of Me

The Mausoleum of Augustus

The mausoleum is located on the Piazza Augusto Imperatore, near the corner with Via di Ripetta as it runs along the Tiber. The grounds cover an area equivalent to a few city blocks nestled between the church of San Carlo al Corso and the Museum of the Ara Pacis. The mausoleum is currently in the process of a restoration, upon which it will open to the public. The Mausoleum of Augustus was actually one of the first of many large building projects undertaken in the reign of Rome's first emperor. When the Mausoleum was completed in 28 BCE, it was easily the biggest tomb in the Roman world, a record it held throughout the Roman period. Now a ruin situated in Piazza Augusto Imperatore near the river Tiber, this once magnificent circular edifice stood around 45 metres high and almost 90 metres in d

The miraculous chapel of Saint Theodora

Near the small village Vastas in the prefecture of Arcadia, there is the miraculous chapel of Saint Theodora, located in a verdant idyllic creek with dense oak forest.  The journey to Agia Theodora Vasta also compensates the visitor, since the scenery is idyllic. As one approaches the hum of the waters gushing from the foundations of the small church, it is heard more and more intensely, causing the visitor to awe in front of the spectacle he finally sees. The chapel is characterized as a natural miracle because of 17 small oak trees that exist on the roof,  the roots of which are nowhere to be seen, and a small flows from its foundations.  There are several beliefs about the historical truth. One theory holds that St. Theodora was Augustus Theodora, daughter of Emperor Constantine VIII of the Macedonian dynasty, who is said to have ruled as a man from 1055 to 1056. Augustus Theodora according to Michael II's claims by Michael II with a movement she became serio
